Limb loss can be an extremely difficult adjustment that is filled with changes and quite possibly a lot of pain. Secondary conditions that can be attributed to the loss of a limb can also be very painful. However, you can take certain precautions to prevent secondary conditions. The key to warding off these conditions is preventing complications. Creative Technologies wants to emphasize the importance of taking care of your residual limb, your prosthesis and your general health.

It is very important to monitor the condition of your residual limb. Since it is concealed by your prosthesis, it is a good idea to get on a schedule of twice a day checks to make sure that everything looks ok. It is also important to keep the limb clean by twice a day washings with mild soaps to prevent skin irritation. Watch for any blisters or sores that the rubbing of your prosthesis may be causing and show them to your doctor. Taking good care of your residual limb cannot be overstated.

You also need to be sure that you are taking care of your prosthetic, socks and liners. Making sure that your prosthesis is comfortable and fits well is very important. An ill-fitting prosthesis increases your risk of secondary pain. Check it frequently for signs of wear and tear and always report any concerns. You can help maintain the correct alignment by making sure to always wear shoes that have the same heel height as the one that your prosthesis was originally lined up with. Perspiration can also cause rashes and irritation. When this occurs, remove your prosthesis and dry the liner and skin before putting it back on. Never put on a wet liner.
